The Raccoon Lodge, an enormous, well-known international non-profit membership corporation, is designed to provide humanitarian services and help build peace and goodwill. It encourages and attracts significant media coverage. The Lodge excludes only women from membership. Alice Kramden is turned down for membership and challenges the restrictive membership in court on grounds of a state statute entitling all persons, regardless of sex, to full and equal accommodations, advantage, facilities, privileges and services in all business establishments in the state. The Lodge claims its rights to freedom of association allow it to exclude women. What results?
