Question

1 Approved Answer

The reactions A ->B, r 1 = k1CA /(1 + KACA + KBCB + KCCC) B-> C, r 2 = k2CB /(1 + KACA +

The reactions

A ->B, r 1 = k1CA /(1 + KACA + KBCB + KCCC)

B-> C, r 2 = k2CB /(1 + KACA + KBCB + KCCC)

occur on a non-porous catalyst. Under the operating conditions prevailing in a steady-state CSTR, the following information is available: kmB = 1.2kmA, kmC = 0.9kmA, k2 = 0.3k1, KA = 0.8 L/mol, KB = 1.2 L/mol, KC = 0.6 L/mol, CAb = 2 mol/L, CBb = 1.2 mol/L, CCb=0.3 mol/L, CAs = 1.8 mol/L.

(a). Obtain the surface concentrations of B and C (CBs and CCs) by considering the flux balances for A, B and C. Solution will be facilitated by considering ratios of flux balances for (i) A and B, (ii) A and C, and/or (iii) B and C.

(b). From the flux balance for A, compute k1/kmA using the results in (a).

(c). Compute the effectiveness factors for the two reactions.
