The reason for selling in the United States has to do with the size and income levels of the market. Despite the costs of moving the tomatoes across the border, Bryant can simply make a greater profit on his tomatoes in the United States. In Bryant's production system, the tomatoes are grown hundreds or thousands of miles away from the consumer. So Bryant has to worry about the costs of truck maintenance and fuel, logistical issues like border and customs concerns, regulation from two different national governments, and the difficulties of trying to manage an operation in Mexico from Texas headquarters.
