The rise of synthetic media and deepfakes is forcing us towards an important and unsettling realization. Our historical belief that video and audio are reliable records of reality is no longer tenable, as every digital communication channel our society is built upon is at risk of being subverted. Synthetic media and deepfakes pose a range of threats, many of which are no longer theoretical. In a report by Sensity (formerly known as Deeptrace, the world's first visual threat intelligence company), deepfake creation technologies and tools are being commodified through a growing number of communities, computer apps, and services. Their online presence is rapidly expanding, with the vast majority of these videos involving pornographic content supported by a significant viewership across several dedicated websites, with women exclusively being targeted. Unfortunately, it is also destabilizing political processes by undermining the perceived objectivity of videos featuring politicians and public figures, resulting in increased scale and impact. In addition, deepfakes are providing cybercriminals with new sophisticated capabilities to enhance social engineering and fraud, which pose a tremendous threat to digital businesses. Assume that The Inside became the victim of a fraud attack using synthetic voice audio recently. The cybercriminals used synthetic voice audio that impersonated the CEO, accurately replicating her accent and speaking style to send a specific message to the CFO (Chief Financial Officer) to wire money to a supplier. Recognizing the voice and believing it to be real, the CFO complied with the request to wire $243,000 to the supplier. These funds were then moved from the supplier accounts to several other locations. By the time both persons realized that they have been cheated, the money would have been impossible to track, and the perpetrators would be difficult to identify. How best should The Inside prepare itself to avoid this threat in the future? Your answer should be based on mechanisms covered in Lesson 6 that are utilized to face these new challenges in cybersecurity. You may also add based on online references if necessary. (10 Marks)
