THE RITZ-CARLTON IN BOSTON In 1927, Edward N. Wyner, a local Boston real estate developer, was asked by Mayor Curley to build a world-class hotel. Wyner, who was constructing an apartment building and was up to the second floor at the time, agreed and changed the apartment building into a hotel. Because of the reputation of Ritz in Europe and the cosmopolitan society in Boston, Wyner knew The Ritz-Carlton name would secure immediate success. The Ritz-Carlton, Boston opened on 19 May in 1927. In the tradition of Cesar Ritz, Wyner was meticulous about maintaining the privacy of his guests; a policy strictly adhered to today in all Ritz-Carlton hotels. And thus, the elite were drawn to his hotel. However, he was also very aware of the role and reputation the hotel had in the community: during the depression Wyner kept the lights on in vacant hotel rooms to portray an aura of success. The Community Footprints Fund was established to supplement the Community Footprints efforts of our properties around the world and support broader-based charitable causes. The Fund was formed as an Internal Revenue code 501(c)(3) organisation, as part of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region public charity. The guiding principles of their social responsibility programme, Community Footprints, are to engage, contribute and inspire. This fit in with their first mission statement which focused on being positive, supportive members of their communities and sensitive to the environment. At The Ritz- Carlton, employees are empowered to actively give back to their local communities by focusing on three key areas: . Hunger and poverty relief by partnering with community organisations and social enterprises to concentrate on projects where they can make the biggest difference. These projects include from building homes, cooking and serving food at shelters to providing essential resources; every contribution helps. Well-being of children by partnering with local organisations that provide a safe haven and nurturing environment to children. These efforts include participating in literacy programmes, building libraries and playgrounds, and offering job readiness and workplace training to disadvantaged youth. Through Succeed through Service, these efforts extend to career exploration, mentoring, and service-learning.Environmental conservation by being committed to working towards a more sustainable future by protecting and preserving natural resources. The Ritz-Carlton Environmental Action Conservation Teams (REACT) at each property implement environmental best practices designed to minimise our environmental imprint. Locally, their employees work towards preserving the environment through native plant restoration projects, the protection of endangered species, creation of community gardens and beach and roadside clean-ups.
