The Scenario: Rhino Poaching and Translocation Poaching threatens wildlife conservation in Africa, despite government investing millions into weapons and anti-poaching task teams. Consider a mathematical model for rhino poaching where the aim is to predict rhino population levels and develop solutions to stop rhino poaching. The model we consider to increase rhino populations is rhino translocation (movement from one area to another). In this model an initial rhino population is considered. The population is limited by a carry capacity that depends on food availability and game farm size. Once the population increases sufficiently, a valued multiple p of the population is relocated to a new area so they may repopulate that area. In other words, a value of 0 will result in no rhinos being translocated while a value of 1/2 will result in half of the current population being translocated. This process will continue as long as sufficient rhino are in an area so as to be relocated to another area. Rhinos are very territorial and interactions vary depending on how much territory is available to each rhino. Identify which factor is not important when considering growth rates of the rhino population A. Population Density B. Annual Rainfall C. Rhino Horn Size OD. Rhino Sex (male/female) E. Rhino Age Identify which one of the following is not a reasonable assumption to make. A. The translocation parameter should be constant B. The carry capacity should be time dependent C. The rate at which rhinos are poached should be time dependent D. The natural death rate is lower than the natural growth rate E. The size of the game park is constant Identify which one of the following is not a possible solution for p (0,2] A. The Rhino Population becomes Negative. B. The Rhino Population tends to zero. C. The Initial Rhino Population becomes Extinct but Translocated Populations reach Stable Equilibriums. D. The Rhino Population reaches a Stable Equilibrium around the Carry Capacity. E. The Rhino Population tends to infinity
