The school counseling curriculum is a planned instructional design that is comprehensive in scope and preventative in nature. Some schools and districts adopt a specific school counseling curriculum, while others give the school counselor the freedom to design a counseling curriculum based on the unique needs of the students at the school. In both cases, ASCA maintains the position that school counselors hold the professional and ethical obligation to maintain multicultural competence and practice as a social justice advocate. School counselors must be prepared for what to consider when designing a curriculum that is culturally sensitive.

Assignment: An Annotated Bibliography by reviewing a minimum of eight counseling curriculum resources. Examples of counseling curriculum may include school wide programs, classroom lessons, and/or small group curriculum. Specifically consider the curriculum's applicability across diverse student needs (social and cultural considerations, varying learning levels (i.e., special education students), gender and sexual orientation, and religious identity).
