The ship Titanic sank in 1912 during its maiden voyage from England to New York City. A majority of the 1309 passengers perished in the sinking of the Titanic because of inadequate lifeboats. Most of the seats on the lifeboats went to the first-class passengers; passengers in the second and third class were less likely to survive.
