The Social and Cultural Diversity Analysis (1,000-1,250 words) requires the student to identify and reflect on possible personal biases regarding cultural identity: gender, religion, sexual or gender orientation, race, ethnicity, national origin, socioeconomic or disability status. Refer to the cultural identity concepts covered in your Topic 4 Cultural Genogram assignment to help develop Part 1 of this assignment. You may use the GCU Statement on the Integration of Faith and Work and GCU Christian Counseling Research Guide in the Class Resources to support your response.
When constructing this analysis, include a three-part structure according to the following
: Part One: Personal History With Discrimination
The first part of the analysis requires you to identify information from your own personal history. Use the following prompts in your reflection:
1. Identify your personal biases and how they will impact your counseling approach.
Remember, everyone has biases. The point is to become aware of your personal biases so as not to project them onto your clients.
2. Describe your personal history by documenting experiences with discrimination you may have experienced and how your cultural background impacted these situations. If you have not had any such experiences, share why you believe you have not experienced discrimination in relation to the following cultural identities: gender, religion, sexual or gender orientation, race, socioeconomic status, disability status, or culture.
3. Identify memories of contact with those culturally different than you are, including the cultural identity differences listed above. What were your experiences associated with these differences? Be specific.
4. How has your life experience affected the way you relate to people with different cultural identities? Please explain.
Part Two: Reflections on Racism/Discrimination
The second part of the paper requires you to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of racism/discrimination. Use the following questions to help guide your reflections:
1. What does it mean to be a subtle racist? Please include a referenced definition and example.
2. Why could there be significant differences in perceptions and values of members within the same ethnic group?
Be specific.
Part Three: Applying Ethics and Cultural Identity
The third part of your analysis requires you to reflect on your cultural identity and the ACA (American Counseling Association) or ASCA (American School Counselor Association) code of ethics regarding how it will inform your future practice.
Please use the code of ethics related to your program and professional identity (family and marriage therapy).
To successfully answer the following statements or questions, please use the corresponding numbers in your response:
1. Identify and cite the specific multicultural codes found in the ACA or ASCA ethical codes you will use to inform your future practice. Please explain, considering your own cultural identity awareness.
2. How would you apply the ethical code considerations in your treatment planning to be culturally sensitive?
How would this inform your referral process?
3. What evidence-based strategies can you use to build rapport with diverse clients or students?
Choose two cultural identities to discuss (gender, religion, sexual or gender orientation, race, socioeconomic status, disability status, or culture).
4. Cite resources you can use to dispel your personal biases and to become more culturally responsive and sensitive. (a)Include two to three professional journals on treatment practices and cultural biases.
(b) Identify two to three scholarly sources of potential counselor cultural bias within these practices.
5. Define multicultural competence. Based on your increased knowledge, skills, and awareness in this course, reflect upon the growth you have made in your multicultural competence. How will you continue to apply it in your development as a counselor-in-training.?
