The strength of the local and national economies is often measured by the unemployment rate. The total workforce includes the number of people who are employed and the number of people actively searching for employment, but remain unemployed. The unemployment rate is determined by finding the percentage of the total workforce that is unemployed. This calculation excludes the population of people who are unemployed, but no longer receive unemployment benefits or have stopped trying to finding work. How does the exclusion of people who have stopped trying to find employment or no longer receive unemployment affect the actual employment rate in the country ?
