The system shown schematically below consists of 1200 m of 5 cm diameter cast iron pipe ( = 0.26 mm) used to convey water at 20 C from point 1 to an elevated reservoir. Along the way are four long-radius 90 bends (each with K = 0.3), two long-radius 45 bends (each with K = 0.2), and an open globe valve (K = 8.5). Elevation 400m Elevation 500m 45 Open globe valve 45 a) What is the gauge pressure required at point 1 to deliver 18 m/hr of water into the reservoir? (6 marks) 3.43 MPa b) An engineer suggests that the pumping power required to drive the flow in part (a) could be reduced by removing the globe valve, and leaving the system otherwise unchanged. Calculate the required pumping power with and without the globe valve, and comment on the soundness of the suggestion. In either case the flow rate of water into the reservoir remains at 18 m/hr. (4 marks) w/ valve 17.2 kW w/out valve 17.1 kW -not a good suggestion since functionalitly (ability to block back flow) is removed with change to pumping power very little
