The thesis is AN OPINION. Three types of opinions can be made into thesis statements:

1. Assessments (evaluations): "good/bad"; "beautiful/ugly"; "moral/immoral," etc.
2. Predictions: "will"
3. Advice: "should"

There are THREE parts in a thesis:

1. TOPIC
2. CONTROLLING IDEA
3. EXPLANATION. WHY DO YOU THINK SO? THREE PARALLEL APPEALS

Write thesis statements for the following Topic. One is done for you, and please complete 2 and 3.

1. Legalizing marijuana in Canada (assessment)
2. Capital punishment in the whole world (prediction)
3. Every student in Canada and mandatory learning French in school (advice)

Answers:

First, brainstorm the topic. Find as many appeals/reasons as you can.

Second, organize the appeals by their type: logical, emotional, and ethical.

Third, make sure you use the same subject for all three appeals to make the appeals parallel.

Possible thesis statements: (Example)

1. Legalizing marijuana in Canada is a positive act by the government because legally produced marijuana is no more unethical to use than tobacco and alcohol (ethical appeal); it (= legally produced marijuana) is regulated and safer than street-bought drugs (logical appeal); and it = legally produced marijuana) helps users to relax and cope with life difficulties (emotional appeal).
