The third step in our nine-step project lifecycle is to develop the project schedule. The project schedule can be efficiently considered after the team has developed the project's scope and objectives. In practice, schedule development often happens simultaneously with the scope and budget development processes. Developing the project schedule is an iterative process that can take some time to complete. For this assignment, we will keep our deliverables as simple as possible but sufficient to be meaningful. Multiple processes are used in this step, including Plan Schedule Management, Define Activities, Sequence Activities, Human Resource Planning, Estimate Activity Resources, Estimate Activity Durations, and Develop Schedule.
Section 5.6 of the PMI publication "Process Groups: A Practice Guide" describes thePlan Schedule Management process in the ScheduleManagement plan document. Schedule planning is intended to create theProject Schedule Management plan and to select a scheduling methodology(i.e., Critical Path Method (CPM), and a scheduling tool (i.e., Excel, MS Project, etc.). It sets the format and the criteria for developing and controlling the project schedule. The other processes, Define Activities, Sequence Activities, Estimate Activity Resources, Estimate ActivityDurations, and Develop Schedule, are described inSections 5.7-2.10 of the PMI publication "Process Groups: A Practice Guide" describes. Human Resource planning is defined in Section5.15-5.16 of the PMI publication "Process Groups: A Practice Guide." The project schedule baseline is a version of the schedule model accepted and approved by the project management team; it contains planned (baselined) activity start and finish dates.
