The three-phase model of Crisis Management is, pre-crisis, crisis response, and post-crisis. It was uncovered that VW used cheating software to manipulate software to make a vehicle appear that it was under proper code but in actuality, it was producing 10 to 40 times more than the allowed amount of emissions on the road. I think VW handled the pre-crisis phase poorly, as they knew what they were doing was wrong and unethical. When the current CEO stepped down, I believe that was the proper thing for him to do to allow the company to have a fresh start and allow for the new CEO to regain the trust of customers. VW handled the crisis response properly by coming out with a statement and also setting aside funds to repair the vehicles that were affected. I think VW handled the last part of the phase, post-crisis poorly as they were not 100% transparent with customers and it left people with having lack of trust in the company. Overall I would say that VW had a lot of room for improvement when handling this situation. I think communication and ethics are a huge part of the sustainability of the supply chain, being able to provide customers with 100% transparency and honesty will ensure that customers can feel that even in bad situations they can still trust the company because they are willing and able to own up to their mistakes. Being ethical is a huge part of this as well because when making unethical decisions, that is when customers will lose their trust and confidence in the company. To ensure recalls in the supply chain, being on top of the procurement of products is key, making sure each step is followed properly and having a transparent relationship with employees, customers and suppliers is important. Improving and ensuring that policies are followed and avoiding all shortcuts can also ensure that recalls can be avoided.
