The United States is no stranger to mass shootings. Over the past few years, there have been a number of shootings incurring massive carnage and death at the hands of armed criminals. For example, 58 people were killed at a concert by a gunman in Las Vegas October 2017. To date this event is the deadliest mass shooting we have experienced in America. Whenever extreme (and rare) events like this occur, commenter's begin trying to explain why the events happened and what caused the individuals to do what they did. Psychological problems like mental illness within the perpetrators are routinely proposed as the culprit. Watch the news after a mass shooting and almost without exception you will hear someone blame mental illness.
