The United States is the largest exporter of food products worldwide, sending massive amounts of plant and animal products around the world. Among the top export destinations of the United States are Canada, Mexico, China, Japan and Germany. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Mexico is the biggest exporter of fresh produce to the U.S. According to the Mexican government, there are some 1.5 million tomato growers in Mexico, and exports of the product to the United States are worth around $2 billion annually. On May 7, 2019, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced the termination of the 2013 Suspension Agreement on Fresh Tomatoes from Mexico. This means the U.S. will impose a 17.5% tariff on imported Mexican tomatoes. The tariff will be collected as cash by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) while negotiations between the U.S. and Mexico continue. The tariffs will remain in place until a new deal is reached. How would this tariff affect you as a U.S. tomato grower? How would this tariff affect you as a U.S. consumer? Who would benefit from the tariff? Who would lose from the tariff? Will the U.S. and Mexico reach a new agreement? How would the tariff affect the U.S.-Mexico trade relationship in the long-run
