The US and China are interdependent economic partners (high levels of trade with each other) but geostrategic rivals.
Geostrategic Rivalry and
The US is the world's sole remaining military superpower, spending more on defense spending than the next 10-11 military powers combined and with the capability to project power to the furthest reaches of the globe and to sustain two conventional wars at the same time. China is building an economic trading empire and is the leading source of foreign direct investment in the economies of the South. China is attempting to claim the South China Sea as an exclusive economic zone for itself and is in dispute with seven neighbors over this body of water. The South Sea is the principal area of maritime navigation that connects S. Korea, Japan, and the Philippines with the Middle East, South Asia, and Australia. The US and it allies seek to maintain the South China Sea open for international transit. China seeks to deliver the ability to deny access to this area.
Trade Frictions:
Since the 2000s, many observers and politicians in the US have criticized China trade and investment policies and advocate that the US should pursue more protectionistic measures such as imposing tariffs, banning Chinese investments in the US, prohibiting trade with certain Chinese companies accused of intellectual property rights (IPO) theft and engaging in a tit for tat strategy in general Others, who are advocates for free trade claim that the best policy for the US is to lodge complaints in the World Trade Organization (WTO) about IPO violations and other unfair practices and to engage in direct negotiations, not institute tariffs, quotas, and bans which are distortionary and ultimately hurt US consumers.
Do some research on this topic and formulate a stance, either generally Pro "Free Trade " with China with reasonable actions to correct for questionable or unfair practices or Anti-Free Trade, Pro Tariff War with China. The first post must have at least 3 arguments with supporting data and citations.
