Geostationary satellites remain in a fixed position relative to some point on Earth because they are placed in orbit 3.6 *107 meters above the Earths surface. This satellite is to be equipped with a high resolution, widefield-of-view digital camera that will create JPEG images to be transmitted over a 10 Mbps full-duplex microwave link back to a computer at its base station on Earth. The propagation speed of this link is 2.4 *108 meters/second. The satellite transmits each image as a stream of 37 *106 bits along with a very small header that contains a checksum computed over the image contents. When the image has been received at the base station, the computer then computes a checksum over the received image and compares it with the checksum calculated at the satellite. A small acknowledgement message is sent back to the satellite over the microwave link indicating whether or not the image was received correctly. If the image was not received correctly the entire image is retransmitted from the satellite. If the image was received correctly, the camera can then immediately begin to acquire a new image and transmit the next stream of bits to the ground station.
