"The vaccine question is vexing executives, who want to protect their workers and customers but avoid legal battles and accusations of discrimination against people who are not vaccinated. The U.K. government has said it will not issue "vaccine passports" that would clear people for work or travel, leaving companies to establish their own policies."[1]

The topic of 'performance management' has been discussed throughout ACCT 3420; Week 1 covered performance measures; Return on Investment, Residual Income, EVA, Balanced Scorecard. Employees can become more motivated to achieve these performance levels with incentives.

This week we look at performance management from the perspective of ensuring a safe workplace. As employees start back to work on a regular basis in the latter half of 2021, we are learning more about whether employers can mandate employees to take a COVID vaccine. When asked this question, a lawyer, interviewed by HR Reporter Canadian said:

"I'd be very reticent to counsel any employer to mandate vaccination for their employees and the reason is it opens up a whole host of issues with human rights considerations, as well as privacy law implications. It's a very thorny issue. Absent clear government direction that this should be mandated, I'd be very slow to do it in most workplaces."[2]

Yet, employers are faced with the dilemma of how to bring employees back to the workplace in a safe manner. Here is where 'incentivizing' employees with monetary rewards has been suggested as a way to encourage more employees to be vaccinated. In a way we could call this performance management, as it is a tool used to align employees' motivation with the organization's goals of providing a safe work environment. The question is whether incentivization is an effective way to minimize exposure to COVID.

stand on : corporations should offer incentives for their employees to get a Vaccine.
