The Vasa is a ship in Sweden that sank after sailing only 1300m. The ship was known to be unstable for many reasons, but set sail anyway in the Baltic Sea. The Baltic sea has a density of 1005 kg/m. The ship's mass was 1210 tonnes and it sat with approximately 47m of its hull (length) in the water and was 9.7 m wide. (a) If the draft of the ship (how far it sat in the water) was 3.9 m and it carried roughly 260 tonnes of supplies and people. How much ballast (extra weight) would the ship need to be stable at this draft? Assume the Vasa ship to have a rectangular cross section. (b) In reality, the Vasa only carried 120 tonnes of ballast. Where was its center of buoyancy located? (c) What could the ship-makers have done to help stabilize the Vasa? (d) As the ship sank, several people tried to climb the mast and sit in the crows nest. Given that the mast was 52m tall with a specific gravity (compared to freshwater) of 0.85 and a diameter of .8 m, will your makeshift raft keep you and your two companions above water? You each have a mass of 75 kg and the crows nest adds 300 kg to your total mass. You may treat yourself and your companions in the crows nest as point masses. The mast is submerged up to a depth h.
