The Wilde family has been through a lot. All family members have their own lives and careers. They mostly interact through text messages and might get together once in the summer or for Christmas. Otherwise, they seldom find themselves in the same location.

Judy is 61 years old, divorced, and self-employed. She has a good heart but has developed quite a diva complex due to the success of her business. She spends a couple of months a year in Michigan but prefers her home in Las Vegas. Her way of dealing with problems is by throwing money at them, but she "can't be bothered" with anything emotional or "hands-on." She has a 42-year-old son with a serious drug and alcohol problem. She supports him financially.

David, 60, is a widowed, retired business owner. has four grown children who have little contact with him as a result of a squabble after their mother died. He has fallen on hard financial times due to his late wife's shopping habits and some dry times for his business. Currently, he is living out of state in a small apartment. He is close to his brother, and sister-in-law.

Carol - 55, married, teacher. She has two grown sons who live out of state. She hopes to retire in a few years so she can move closer to her boys. She and Judy do not speak due to a big fight ten years ago. She has tried several times to reach out to Judy, but Judy won't speak to her. She gets along with her brothers, but they seldom see each other due to work and distance.

Levi - 46, married,  accountant. He and his wife have a nice home but no children. He was the one who took care of their parents during their final years. He has a lot of things he wants to do now since he sacrificed so much for many years while caring for his parents. He and his wife are kind, generous people, but they are burned out on caregiving.

The situation:

David was recently diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Since his children are estranged, he is turning to his siblings for support. He knows his time and resources are limited. He has asked Levi if he can move into his home.

  • What challenges do you see arising as a result of this situation?
  • What can each of the siblings do to provide support for David?
