The world's richest man, Elon Musk completed his $44bn (38.1bn) takeover of Twitter, in Oct, 2022 and immediately tweeted the bird is freed and later said let the good times roll. Several top executives were fired. The bird is freed tweet referred to Elon Musks apparent desire to see the company have fewer limits on content that can be posted. Other goals include wanting to "defeat" spam bots on Twitter and make the algorithms that determine how content is presented to its users publicly available. Musk immediately renamed himself "Chief Twit" on his Twitter bio page, and vowed to overhaul Twitter's business model, take it private and loosen rules against harassment, abuse and misleading claims. Elon musk offered no details on how he will achieve all this and who will run the company. He did mention that plans to cut jobs, leaving Twitter's 7,500 employees fretting about their future. He also claimed that he did not buy Twitter to make more money but to try to help humanity, whom I love. He also indicated that his quest will be to see Twitter as a foundation for creating a super app that offers everything from money transfers to shopping and ride-hailing. On 27th Oct 2022, he walked into Twitter's headquarters on Wednesday with a big grin and a porcelain sink, subsequently tweeting let that sink in. He changed his Twitter profile description to "Chief Twit." On Nov.17, Musk gave staff an ultimatum to either commit to an extremely hardcore culture at the company that involves longs hours at high intensity or leave with severance. Practitioners and researchers observed that time will tell on how this new change will affect everyone. Following are remarks of some of keen observers: The choices Musk has made in the past couple of weeks indicate that he is not prioritizing healthy discussion. What I mean is that he has fired many of those responsible for curating, dealing with threatening and hateful content, and otherwise moderating the Twittersphere... which to me indicates that these activities are not among his priorities.(Gina Baleria, a communications professor). As of this week, the senior leadership are all gone. The old C-suite is gone. The heads of Redbird (engineering), Bluebird (product), and Goldbird (revenue) have all been axed. Now, it appears Elon has brought in his men from Boring Company and Tesla to run the show. David O. Sacks and Jason Calacanis are prowling the office. You can see them in Birdhouse, our staff directory. They're listed there as software engineers: (Anonymous Twitter Executive -27th Nov 2023). After taking disruptive control of Twitter, Elon quickly enacted controversial changes, including ending Twitters work-from-home policy, introducing a new paid verification subscription feature and overhauling the way the platform does content moderation. There was mixed response in media concerning these developments at Twitter. Some observed that Elon is deciding what kind of culture he wants and hes creating it. Logan Mallory, vice president of marketing at Motivosity, an employee engagement platform in Lehi, Utah, observed that the immediate firings will push lots of people away and it will draw other types of talent to him and to Twitter. Its harder to rehire, its harder to retain the talent thats still there, youll lose customers. A cultural consultant observed that Elon is going to build an essential high-performance team that believes in his vision, and once they get to a point where the core product is moving forward in Elons vision, they would start to see things to increase the culture and retainability of top talent start to appear. In the chaotic six weeks that Musk took over Twitter, two divergent workplace ideals, both rooted in Silicon Valley start-up culture, often referred to as a hustle culture have been dramatically clashing. Hundreds of employees walked out in response to Musks ultimatum that they commit to working long hours at high intensity. Others stayed, embracing the Musk method of sleeping in the office, as the Tesla CEO has boasted of doing in the past. Musk appeared to make sleep-from-work hint less subtly, having reportedly converted several areas of Twitter HQ into makeshift bedrooms. Bankman-Frieds tweet in year 2021 - If I sleep in the office, my mind stays in work mode and I dont have to reload everything the next day, resonates well with Elons sleep-from work culture. Though one should not forget that more than a year and a half before Twitters take over, Bankman-Frieds multibillion-dollar crypto empire went down in flames. In Jan 2023, Elon Musk announced a huge change is coming to Twitter with musk revealing that he intends to allow users to tweet a whopping 4,000 characters more than 14 times the current limit in a matter of weeks. Many users predicted long-form tweets would ruin Twitter, while others excited about the change said it would improve user experience by ending the need for people to write multiple tweets in threads to get their message across or post a screenshot of a longer message written elsewhere. Musk also wanted to implement a crude pay-to-play scheme in form of blues paid verification system. Twitter Blues paid verification system was unveiled on 5 November. Under this ambitious program Musk wanted to begin sharing advertising revenue with creators on the platform for the first time. The catch? Eligible users must be signed up for Twitter Blue, which starts at $8 a month. Almost immediately, fake verified accounts flooded the platform. Musks blundering left a deep scar. Twitter Blue was meant to begin shifting Twitters revenue away from ads toward subscriptions. But while chasing a relatively paltry new cash stream, Musk torched the companys ad business the source of most of its billions in revenue. The Blue disaster accelerated a rush of advertisers abandoning the platform, including pharmaceuticals giant Eli Lilly, and by December, what was left of Twitters sales team began offering hundreds of thousands of dollars in free ad spend to lure back marketers. Twitter continues to haemorrhage money, so much so that Musk has stopped paying its bills. The landlords of Twitter offices in San Francisco and London are suing over unpaid rent. And this month Twitter has been auctioning office furniture. Before the take-over, Twitter had been defined by the leadership of Jack Dorsey a cofounder who was known for going on long meditation retreats, fasting 22 hours a day, and walking five miles to the office who was seen by some as an absentee landlord, leaving Twitters strategy and daily operations to a handful of trusted deputies. According to more than two dozen current and former Twitter staffers, Musk has, since buying the company in October 2022, shown a remarkable lack of interest in the people and processes that make his new toy tick. He has purged thousands of employees, implemented ill-advised policies, and angered even some of his most loyal supporters. If free speech was his mandate for Twitter the platform, it has been the opposite for Twitter the workplace. Dissenting opinion or criticism has led to swift dismissals. Musk replaced Twitters old culture with one of his own, but its unclear, with so few workers and plummeting revenues, whether or not this new version will survive, In the three months since Musk bought Twitter, thousands have been sacked and the companys fortunes nosedived. The repercussions for Musks handling of Twitter are now coming. According to his public-merger agreement and internal Twitter documents, Musk agreed to at least match the companys existing severance package, which offered two months pay as well as other valuable benefits. Instead, he laid off employees with the minimum notice required by federal and state law and refused to pay out certain awards. Now more than 500 employees are pursuing legal action against Musk for what they are owed, in addition to his alleged discrimination against minority groups in his handling of the layoffs. Musk claims he always intended to be Twitters CEO only temporarily. With the damage he has done in three months to the company and to his own wealth those watching the nosedive, whether with horror or schadenfreude, cant help but wonder how much longer he can wait. His failures at Twitter have already damaged his reputation as a genius. How smart could he really be, the guy who purchased a company for far more than it was worth, then drove what remained of it into the ground? In some ways, Musks initiatives seem vindicated and in the right direction to make Twitter more lean and agile. Despite a lot of turnover during this turbulent take-over phase, the platform has survived. Musk, had the vision of right -sizing the bloated company, and now it is operating on minimal headcount. But he is largely unaware of what hes actually broken: the company culture that built Twitter into one of the worlds most influential social networks, the policies that attempted to keep that platform safe. The users who populate it every day with their conversations, breaking news, and weird jokes trusted Twitter and that was Twitters true value and contributions to the world. Now with Musks change initiatives, this trust notion stands at risk!
