Theo - Case Study Theo's background Theo is a 17-year-old boy who lives in a rural town in Victoria, about three hours outside of Melbourne. He lives with his mother, Anne, and three siblings who are all younger than him. Theo's father, Nathan, and his mother recently divorced which resulted in Nathan moving to Adelaide. Theo is upset about this as he gets along really well with his father, and it has meant the family dynamic has changed. Nathan has said that Theo is welcome to live with him in Adelaide - Theo wants to maintain the strong relationship with his father, but is concerned about moving to a city in a different state, changing schools, and leaving his friends. For now, Theo, his mother, and his three siblings have moved to a 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom house in an area of town that is considered to be more socio-economically disadvantaged than where they were before. Theo says that he can often hear the neighbours arguing throughout the night. Due to the divorce, Anne has had to take on extra shifts as a nurse at the local hospital. This has involved occasional night shift work, resulting in a stressed and overworked Anne. It has also meant that Theo has had to start looking after his younger siblings on school nights. Although he generally gets along well with his siblings, he reports that the extra responsibility is difficult, especially when juggling school work and his friendships. Theo has begun Grade 12 and wants to do well so he can attend University. His friendship group are encouraging each other to 'hustle' and 'be on the grind' so they can go to University together. Theo's behaviour Yesterday, Theo was leaving at the end of one of his favourite classes, Science, when he was pulled aside by the teacher who asked whether he had cheated on the most recent test. Theo slammed his books on the teacher's desk and screamed, "I didn't cheat! You're an idiot!", before pushing over a chair, storming out of the room, and slamming the door behind him. His teacher, Mr. Wright, is concerned over Theo's behaviour as it is very out of character - he knows Theo to be a polite and good student.
