Theoretical Approach

Questions have been raised as to whether the DSM-5 improves upon the science and evidence-based support for common psychodiagnostic categories seen in the earlier DSM-IV-TR. Questions have also been raised about the possible impact of pharmaceutical companies on these diagnostic changes. Research the various issues involved in the development of the DSM-5, which replaced the DSM-IV-TR in 2013. Be sure to consider the above mentioned issues, then respond:

• What are the reported strengths and weaknesses of the DSM-5 in comparison with the DSM-IV-TR? Provide support for your conclusions.
• Detail your perspective on whether DSM-5 diagnostic changes from the DSM-IV-TR were driven, in part, by the influence of pharmaceutical interests. Provide support.
• Compare and contrast the assets and liabilities of the current DSM-5 and the coordinated ICD-9-CM classification system.
