There are in fact studies questioning pro forma earnings adjustment items. Some studies show that there are actual cash flow effect of these adjustments. Others find that these adjustments are more positive when firms are planning to secure additional financing. Given these findings, formulate a theory of regulation to explain why regulators still allow disclosure of pro forma earnings.
