There are some medical conditions that have such an effect on everyday life that they make it imperative for medical responders to know up front what they are dealing with. Those who have diabetes, epilepsy, or other conditions that could manifest when least expected usually wear some kind of identifying information on them at all times.

This also goes for those who have an allergy, those who have made a decision to refuse certain treatments, and others. This vital information can give medical responders hints as to what the problem might be or warn them about treatments or medications that could hurt the patient or go against their wishes.

In this activity, you will research the most used medical identification devices. Find out what they look like, the information they provide, and where a medical responder should look for them.

While you are conducting your research, gather information on the statistics of medical identification devices. Which one is the most widely used? Does one tend to identify a particular condition more than others? Does the identification device tend to give all the information needed, or does it direct to another place for more details? Does the medical device contain the patient's signature, making the device a sort of legal document?

When you have completed your research, use it to benefit those in emergency response.

On a spreadsheet, organize the data you found about the common medical identification devices. You can decide how to separate the devices and data, but make sure that the spreadsheet distinctly shows the differences among the devices you've listed.

Next, create a slideshow designed for responders that discusses the common medical identification devices. For each device, explain where an EMR would look for it, describe what information it provides, and give at least one way in which the EMR would need to adjust the patient's care upon discovering the device.

Incorporate your completed spreadsheet as an image in your slideshow so that the EMRs can see this information in a concise way.
