Let us lookat the amount of money spent at the Dollar Tree (tax excluded) by nine different customers.They were $1,$1,$1,$1,$2,$2,$2,$3 and $14. Find the mean, mode and median of these amounts. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of reporting each of these. Which, do you think, best represents the data?

In reporting data, individuals can use the mean, median or mode and call it the "average" to make data appear the way most advantageous to their cause. When looking at such reports, what should you be looking for when you see the word "average"? If you are able to ask a researcher for a mean, median or mode, which would you request and why?
