There are two thieves. One comes from a poor family, while the other comes from a wealthy family. The former is unable to mitigate his sentence by offering restitution, while the latter has the financial means to do so. Our judicial system wants to restore the victim to his or her position before the crime is committed, if possible.Should the judge allow one offender to avoid a prison term because that offender has the financial means to do so while incarcerating the other? Why or why not?
