On February 1, 2017, I started my position as a Human Resources Assistant at a School Board Office. At this time, the Director of Human Resources was in the process of retiring. The administrative assistant to the Superintendent informed me that the former assistant was getting paid to help me. Communication with the former assistant started out well. The former assistant emailed the contact person at VDOE, so I could get licensure training. VDOE provided the licensure documents and a PowerPoint via email for the training. The former assistant also communicated with me by giving me access to the ParaPro Assessment information for Instructional Assistants who needed to take the test in order to keep their positions. We communicated that we would meet up one evening at the office so she could train me on creating contracts. When we met up, I received a very brief training due to her having to attend her son's baseball game. Even though we were supposed to meet up again, we never did. We ended up doing a lot of our communicating through email until August. This made me have to figure things out on my own. I was thankful to God for guiding me through.
On July 1, 2017, a new Director of Human Resources was hired. Every time I turned around there was a report or something we did not know we had to do. Therefore, I figured if I get a list of our responsibilities it would make things go a lot smoother. On August 2, 2017, I emailed the former assistant to see if she could provide us with a list of our responsibilities. I received an email in return saying: "As far as what all I did. I have NO idea!!" I was done and at that moment I knew what I had to do. I searched the file cabinets in the office and was able to find what I needed to do, the timelines of reports, as well as other things that needed to be done. I basically taught myself what I needed to do in my position as Human Resources Assistant.
