Think First about Making a Difference in Others' Lives, and Emulate Successful People: I sold books for Southwestern Publishing Company, door to door, in the summers between my college semesters. I learned when I focused on making money or how many sales I had made, I did not enjoy my job nearly as much as when I focused on helping people. I also did not make as much money. I carried that into my construction career of 43 years. During that time, I realized again my time was much more enjoyable when I focused first on those I sought to help. I observed that my construction crews were far more fulfilled in their jobs when I started emphasizing and measuring the clients' reaction to our construction teams. It magnified the "self-worth" of construction workers, one of the lowest self-esteem industries on earth. When they began to focus on the needs of our clients, instead of their own issues at work, they enjoyed their day better and did a more professional job. I often say, "If you do what successful people do, you will be successful." That works best when you correctly define what success looks like. I was not that smart, but I emulated the actions and practices of some wise and honest leaders, and that assured my successful life and career. Sources: Written by April Anthony and Johnny Stites, January 27, 2018. In the chapter, the "desirable and acquirable attitudes and behaviors" of many successful entrepreneurs were described.
They are:
Leadership abilities
Opportunity obsession
Commitment and determination
Motivation to excel
Courage
Tolerance of risk, ambiguity, and uncertainty
Creativity, self-reliance, and adaptability
This list was presented to Johnny and he was asked to identify three of these qualities that were critical to his success. Based on your reading of his remarks, identify the three you believe he would have chosen and provide reasons he would have given for selecting them.
