Example. I think companies that make potato chips barely fill their bags. I researched and found that there should be 20 chips in a 1 ounce bag.I will get a sample of 10 bags, count the number of chips in each, and then find the mean and standard deviation. My null hypothesis is that=20and my alternative hypothesis is<20. I will use alpha = .05 and calculate the test statistic and critical value. I think my result would be that my p value < .05, which means that I can most likely reject the hypothesis that there are 20 chips per bag.
