Myvariables would be the experience of childhood sexual or physical abuse [operationalized as a quantitative {measurement} and continuous variable on a scale of [1|le in which 0 means no abuse and 10 means severe abuse} and the severity of bromyalgia symptoms loperationalized as a measurement and continuous variable on a scale of 0-10 in which 0 means no symptoms and 10 means severe symptoms}. Abuse is my explanatory variable and bromyalgia symptoms is my response variable. I would run an observational study, because although I could technically randomly assign my participants to either an abuse or no abuse condition, this would be unethical. Because this is an observational study, I could only mal-(e a correlational or predictive claim. If my results demonstrate an association, then I could say that having high levels of childhood abuse predicts bromyalgia, but I could not say that childhood abuse causes bromyalgia.
