Instructions

  1. Maintain a weekly diary or log book outlining your learning experiences in sustainable marketing, along with your buying and consumption activities. Use the diary entries to develop a reflective journal.
  2. Think about what 'reflective practice' means. According to Boud (2001), reflection is essential to adult and continuing education. "Reflection is necessary working with experience human activity in which people recapture their experience, think about it, mull it over and evaluate it. Working with experience is critical in learning(Boud, Cohen & Walker, 1985, p. 1). Reflection has been said to have four primary purposes in helping learners to (a)understand what they already know (individual); (b) identify what they need to know, reflections advanced understanding of the subject (contextual); (c) make sense of new information and feedback in the context of their own experience (relational) and (d) guide choices for further learning (Hinett, 2002)[i].
  3. Reflections on your experiences, observations, impressions, critical analysis, and evaluation of sustainable marketing practices. Discuss your online or offline encounters with products, services, brands, and organizations. Reflect on whether those encounters gave you a sense of the kinds of actions concerning environmental and social sustainability.
  4. Think about any preconceptions or biases about sustainability when you started the subject and whether and in what situations this changed. Think about class discussions, debates, or comments posted by your peers on discussion forums that might have influenced your learning.
  5. Think about the opportunities, problems, or challenges that you, as a consumer, face about living a more sustainable life, and consider how you could tackle these problems or difficulties. For example, has your learning moved you closer to a more sustainable way of living (i.e., walking, biking, reducing the use of plastics, buying Fairtrade, shopping local, recycling, buying second-hand goods, boycotting, etc.)?
  6. Reflect on how this learning could help you become a more conscious or ethical consumer in the future. What do you do well? What do you do less well and why? What have you learned? What will you do differently as aconsumer in the future? Will this change benefit the environment or society? For example, according to John Grant (2020), the author of 'the Greener Marketing,' when you know that 95% of the energy footprint of a mobile phone is in manufacturing and materials (not charging the battery),you know that dimming the screen won't save much CO2, but keeping the phone in use for an extra year is a big win for the planet.
  7. A maximum of four (4) diary entries should be kept and elaboration provided for each of the learning experiences. The entries should deal with a few consumption domains (i.e., not simply one theme).
  8. The learning journey and your ability to reflect upon, and evaluate your learning, will be assessed according to the criteria outlined in the rubric.
