This assessment consists of a case study on natural-ecological and cultural-heritage management principles within the tourism sector. The case study will reflect issues and key themes that have been included in this subject over 12 weeks. It requires students to analyse and critique the experiences offered by a destination and its competitors; to be aware of the global challenges in maintaining cultural-heritage and environmental resilience in a contemporary real-world context; and to recommend improvements to stakeholder management and appropriate changes to existing sustainability strategies or alternatively, the introduction of new approaches to sustainable management. This assessment is based on Historic Urban Landscapes (HUL). The student can choose the following site for the completion of this assessment: o Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison (Barbados): https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1376; Site for : The Garrison Note: Further research must be conducted. Task 3: Case Study Report Task Description The student writes an academic management report based on one of the above case study. Task Length: 2200words
The report must include the following: An Executive Summary which includes the main findings and recommendations of the report; A Table of Contents with section numbers, section titles/headings (see below for guidance) and page numbers; A brief introduction of your report and Your chosen HUL A description of your chosen HUL's significance Research in visitor numbers to your chosen country/HUL and how this compares to international tourist travel behaviour A brief description of the terms 'cultural landscape' according to ICOMOS, and (using examples) your explanation of how your chosen HUL matches the definitions. Brief but specific analysis of the management and stakeholders involved in the management of your chosen HUL A description and justification (i.e. examples) of the current stage of relationship (using the theory discussed in class) between heritage and tourism management at your chosen HUL Using examples: a discussion on the tangible and/or intangible cultural heritage values of your chosen HUL; your summary of which values dominate in your chosen HUL? Explanation of the concept of gate keepers and analysis of local residents as gatekeepers relating to tourism developments/products at your chosen HUL A definition of the Burra Charter as a tool for sustainable development and how it has been or can be used at your chosen HUL A complete heritage asset audit of the specific site (see introduction to this assessment) Analysis of the (potential) threats to the heritage of your chosen HUL (climate AND non-climate related) Your proposed set of realistic recommendations for sustainable tourism development for your chosen HUL as a response to your research (based on concepts discussed in class): o 2 recommendations regarding the development of 2 sustainable tourism products/services to increase visitors to this landscape o 2 recommendations how to suitably combine technology with cultural tourism products at your chosen HUL o 2 recommendations to improve the relationship between tourism and heritage management at your chosen HUL Reference list (minimum of 4 academic and 3 additional resources) Appendices: Asset audit mandatory; additional charts, graphs, maps highly recommended
