Overview: This assignment mostly addresses the two Modern Shed videos/cases. All videos and related information are linked to Chapters 5 & 15 materials in Canvas. Our Assignment applies the steps of the Planning Process, Strategic Management Process, and Control Feedback Model to Modern Shed. Our Assignment applies the steps of the Planning Process, Strategic Management Process, Control Feedback Model, attached PowerPoint slides, and related chapter information to our Modern Shed videos. Step 1: DEVELOP the Plan. FYI: The attached PowerPoint (Ppt) slides reveal Modern Sheds organizational chart, the model of the Strategic Management Process that was included in previous editions of this text, and other information needed to answer the assignment questions. Contact Dr. Sutton if you have questions. As noted in the Chapter 5 video case, Modern Sheds initial mission was to design & build stylish, custom, prefabricated, backyard dwellings for nearly any purpose. 1. We focus on only one dimension (growth rate) of the corporate level strategies presented in the BCG Matrix (LO 5.10). This means we dont need to consider Modern Sheds percentage of the market share. Refer to PowerPoint (Ppt) slide #6 (attached) that describes the three traditional corporate level (grand) strategies. 1.A. Check the one single Grand Strategy (ppt slide #6) that Modern Shed is pursuing: __Stability, __Growth, or __Retrenchment Also explain 1-2 detailed reason(s) why Modern Shed appears to have adopted this one strategy. B. Check the one single Competitive Strategy (LO 5.11; Exhibit 5-10) that Modern Shed appears to be pursuing: __Differentiation __Focused Differentiation __Cost Leadership __Focused Cost Leadership Also explain 1-2 specific reason(s) why Modern Shed appears to have adopted this one competitive strategy. The slides are provided to illustrate how relevant factors in the external environment translate to opportunities/threats and to save us from needing to create the short SWOT. 2.A. List 2-3 of Modern Sheds core competencies noted in the Internal Strengths found in SWOT (slide #11). B. Explain how Modern Shed benefits from each of 2-3 different Synergies noted in the Internal Strengths (found in the SWOT; refer to slides #10 & 11). (Hint: State each synergy you illustrate.) Cost: Market Power: Technology: Management Skills: C. Explain 2-3 reasons why these core competencies &/or synergies are important for Modern Sheds success (or not). Using our authors terms, do they create value for Modern Sheds customers or not. Steps 2 & 3: TRANSLATE the Plan AND PLAN Operations After Modern Shed developed a SWOT that was more comprehensive than the short SWOT presented in Ppt slide #11, Modern Shed revised their Mission to design & build stylish, custom, prefabricated backyard space-saving dwellings for nearly any purpose. (The Grand & Competitive strategies did not change but the new mission allowed them to take advantage of the new opportunity to create a new product line for home-&-garden expert that they added to SWOT.) 3.A. Explain if it was it a good or bad idea for Modern Shed to accept the order from TV Home-&-Garden expert which resulted in their broadening their mission at that time to be most any type of space-saving dwelling (& no longer limited to backyards). Answer this question by explaining 1-2 detailed reasons why you agree (or disagree) with their decision to accept the order and change their mission. (Hint: Expressing your opinion is fine if you support it with information based on the videos and cases. Speculating about their future with the new mission is also fine if based on videos/cases. FYI: as noted in the last Ppt slide, Modern Shed recently changed their mission again. That fact does not dictate a correct answer to this question.
