Step 1: Read the Following Scenario
You are a group of managers in an organization, which is planning to replace its aging fleet of 85 long and short-haul delivery vehicles. The organization has one central distribution warehouse and delivers to regional distribution facilities in four different locations across Canada.
The organization has asked that your management group to create a team from among the employees to research options, go through the decision-making process and make recommendations as to which option(s) might meet the organization's needs. Once the recommendations have been made to senior management, the team will be adjourned, and their task will be completed.
Step 2: Assignment Elements
Team Creation Tasks
You will describe in detail the process of setting up and maintaining a team for this organizational task. What factors did you consider in establishing a team? What is your understanding of the objective of the task? What is the role of your management group? What criteria did you use to select team members and why? How many team members will you have on the team? Will the team be located physically on one site or will you consider a virtual team with some team members being in other locations? Describe the organizational support systems that the team needs to accomplish its tasks. What sort of time frames have you set for the completion of the task? How do you plan to communicate with the team? What sort of team training will you deliver before moving into the actual task? What issues are you forecasting as the team moves through the team development stages? How are you planning to deal with those issues? What process will you use to adjourn the team after their tasks have been completed? What other factors should be considered and why?
This task should mirror the team creation and maintenance tasks as explained in your module notes and Textbook. You are essentially describing the team process tasks that are required to create and maintain a functional team with goals and objectives. The key component of this section of the assignment is for your team to describe the thought processes used to determine to creation and maintenance of the team. As an example, if you agree that there should be 6 team members, describe the models and concepts used to support that number. Make sure you provide your justification for every team process decision that you make.
Decision Making Tasks
By demonstrating and applying the rational decision-making model, you will describe the step-by-step process that the team will take in coming to the recommendations phase of the decision-making process. Once the team has reached the recommendations stage, the preferred options will be handed over to senior management and the team will be adjourned. Identify strengths and weaknesses in this model and explain what other models could be used to enhance the decision-making process. Describe what senior management needs to do after the recommendations have been made to complete the decision-making process.
