Part 1: Case selection (5 pts)
Identify one of the four topic areas in the course that you want to work on: People, Animals, Environment, Death.
My topic area: People
Isolate one case in this topic area that you want to study. You can do this by considering why you are interested in this topic area. Discuss the area with your group or with me if you are working alone. (3 pts)
My case: Sexual Harassment at workplace
Ask me for approval for your case. (2 pts)
Has Elena approved our case? Yes
Part 2: Case analysis (12 pts)
Identify three values that you believe to be important to your case. (3 pts)
Value 1: Respect
Value 2: Dignity
Value 3: Safety
State why you believe each one is important in your case, and if everyone in your group agreed. (3 pts).
Respect: Respect is vital in this situation because everyone in the workplace, regardless of status, deserves to be treated with dignity and courtesy. In this case, the management breached respect by sexually harassing the server, resulting in a hostile work environment.
Dignity: Dignity is important because it refers to the intrinsic worth and value of every individual. The server's dignity was jeopardised by sexual statements, gestures, and touching, which harmed her feeling of self-esteem and respect.
Safety: Safety is critical in the workplace to make employees feel safe and protected from harassment and abuse. The lack of safety procedures allowed the harassment to continue, causing emotional trauma and misery for the victim.
Introspect on your intuitions about your case. Do you believe your case is right, wrong, or in a grey area? Does everyone in your group agree? (6 pts)
Everyone in the group believes that the case is Morally wrong. Sexual harassment is a blatant breach of human rights and workplace ethics, and the employer's reluctance to handle the problem swiftly compounds the injustice. The sexual harassment had gone on for two years and was not reported due to the fact of the fear of jane losing her job, and her hours reduced which would affect her income. The manager who sexually harassed her was in charge of her schedule therefore making it difficult for jane to report it.
Part 3: Theory type choice (5 pts)
Is your case best analyzed by referring to actions (verbs) or things (nouns)?(1 pt) Why? (5 pts)
Analysing the case through actions focuses on the workplace behaviours and interactions, such as the sexual harassment perpetrated by the manager, the employer's replies (or lack thereof), and the subsequent actions made by both parties. The dynamics of the harassment, the impact on the victim, and the effectiveness of the employer's response can all be understood by reviewing the sequence of events and the specific measures done by those involved. This understanding allows for a more in-depth analysis of the case, as well as the identification of practical strategies to resolve and prevent future events.
If you chose actions, go to part 3.1. Delete 3.2.
Part 3.1: Actions (12 pts)
Identify the action you are analyzing in the case. Be sure you are identifying an actual action. For example, in analyzing capital punishment I may choose to analyze the action of killing itself, the act of sentencing someone to death, passing a policy that allows for capital punishment, or repealing the policy of capital punishment. Be sure to choose an action (a verb) rather than a thing (a noun)(2 pt)
