The used project charter template was downloaded from TeamGantt (Harned, 2021). The template includes an overview of the project with the project name, sponsor, manager, and creation and approval dates. Furthermore, it contains free text fields to specify the business case and goals, the budget, and the scope and deliverables. Additionally, the resources - monetary, human capital, or others - needed and timeline can be described in more detail. Finally, it allows characterizing the risks, dependencies, and stakeholders. Each free text field has a short description of the expected content (Harned, 2021).
This template was chosen for various reasons. Firstly, the document is relatively straightforward, which allows the reader to absorb the information more quickly. Secondly, there is a concise description of what to describe for each bullet point, making it a bit easier to fill out the form (Harned, 2021). Finally, it contains all the data a project charter should include (Kerzner, 2017). Additionally, a detailed blog post helps properly understand the project charter and what to include in the template (Harned, 2021).
A project charter is a legal document that identifies responsibilities and authorities. It authorizes a project and enables the project manager to apply resources (Project Management Institute, 2021). In practice, it is mostly prepared by the project manager. However, the project sponsor should be preparing it in theory. The project charter identifies the project manager and their authority, the business purpose, and gives a summary of the boundary conditions. Furthermore, it describes the project and its objectives and defines the project scope. Finally, it lists the stakeholders and their roles and the project's risks (Kerzner, 2017).
Given the definition of a project charter and the description of the template used above, it is evident that this relatively simple template is well fit to describe the project charter as it asks for all the data that the project charter definition describes. However, it contains fewer fields than the template provided for the class assignment. In conclusion, the template used has more or less everything a project charter needs in a clear, straightforward way, which makes it very good to use - especially for us, as I believe most of us are still somewhat new to this, at least in my opinion, rather advanced project management topic.
