This is a discussion board response to the following question from a fellow classmate.

Question: Discuss and explore at least three aspects of the Code of Ethical Conduct in your profession, which will apply to you. Furthermore, how can ethical violations affect your career?

Response from fellow classmate:

There are several code of ethics required in law enforcement. For example in an article by IACP, "I will never act officiously or permit personal feelings, prejudices, political beliefs, aspirations, animosities or friendships to influence my decisions." (Law Enforcement Code of Ethics, 4). I believe this is the most crucial code of ethical conduct that would apply to me. Not letting any personal opinions get in the way of serving your community will prevent further as an officer. Personal beliefs can turn into wrongful convictions and unjust actions that can get you relieved of duty. Secondly, "I will never engage in acts of corruption or bribery, nor will I condone such acts by other police officers." (Law Enforcement Code of Ethics, 5). Just because there are other bad people in law enforcement does not mean that you have to join them. There are ways to report to your chain of command and keep yourself out of making the same mistakes. Lastly, "...and to respect the constitutional rights of all to liberty, equality, and justice." (Law Enforcement Code of Ethics, 3). Treating people with inequality is one of the most common reasons officers are getting relieved of their duty and this has never made sense to me. This code of ethics will apply to me the most because I only treat everyone equally and will stand up against whoever disagrees. Ethical violations affect careers all the time in law enforcement because officers lose their morals and forget what they signed up to do. What would you do in a scenario where a fellow officer is not doing something ethically right?
