This is a lab data analysis question on Magnets. Can someone help me with the two data analysis questions?
Lab 6 - Magnetism Objective To investigate the properties of magnetic fields and forces produced by currents. At the end of this lab, you should be familiar with the three right hand rules that govern direction of the magnetic fields and magnetic forces. Safety Follow all standard safety procedures when working with current and magnets. Never touch the ends of the wires when they are attached to a battery. Wash your hands after handling magnets. Materials and Equipment * 3 bar magnets *2 compasses, one small and one large Switch * 2 flexible wires with alligator clips on both ends * 4 D cell batteries and holders . Demagnetizer * 2 paper clips Short Plastic tube Digital Multimeter Setup Students should work in groups of two to four and submit one lab report per group. Experiment 1 - Mapping a magnetic field 1. Place a bar magnet in the center of a piece of paper and draw its outline. Red - south 2. Place the small compass near the magnet and mark the direction of the compass arrow. wath north - silver 3. Use the compass to find the direction of the magnetic field at various points (at least 10) around the magnet and mark on the piece of paper. Make sure to test out both sides of the magnet. 4. Draw lines on the paper connecting the compass direction to show the direction of the magnetic field lines. Data Analysis/Conclusion 5. From the drawing, determine which end of the magnet is the north pole which is the south pole and label them. Explain how you made this decision from the direction of the magnetic fields. Experiment 2 - Magnetizing a Paper clip (checking direction of magnetic field 1. Take a paper clip and test it to confirm that it does not make a compass arrow move. If it does, see instructor to demagnetize. 2. Once demagnetized, rub the surface of the paper clip with the north end of a magnet using smooth strokes starting at one end of the paper clip and moving toward the other. Stroke only in one direction. 3. Test the paper clip to see if it now makes the compass arrow move. If so, which end of the compass does it attract? 4. Test the paper clip to see if it attracts another paper clip. Data Analysis/Conclusion 5. Explain what you think is happening to the paper clip when you rub it with the magnet. Did you make it a magnet? How? Straight Wire
