Smart goals for Walmart are a world-renowned retailer that operated differently across the world. The strategic goal is four-fold. First, Walmart aims to dominate the market retail in any area where the company has a presence. The Competitive strategy is associated with leading every sector of business. To follow the competitive strategy. Walmart combines two aspects of differentiation and cost leadership. Strategy formulation is a process of evaluating a company's strategy as well as choosing the most efficient strategy for reaching the goals and objectives set by the company.
Walmart's organizational structure helps the company achieve consistency and better results in terms of operations and performance. Every company needs an organizational structure that helps in accomplishing different goals. It also helps in determining the company's business activities. Walmart follows a Hierarchical function organizational structure or commonly known as a 'matrix' organization at the store level which is a blend of other types of organization structure known as divisional organization structure and functional organization structure.
The four functions of management are the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals. For managers to be effective, they must achieve organizational goals. These goals are traditionally known as the four functions of management., including planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.
Planning is defined as the act of making decisions about goals and activities for an organization. Organizations need a plan to set the stage for actions and other achievements. According to (Lewis, Goodman, & Fandt, 1998), plans provide a foundation for coordinating and directing the activities of the organization so that goals can be achieved.
Organizing means assembling and coordinating the people, money, physical attributes, and information needed for companies to achieve goals. When companies do not organize properly, plans fail through, and success fails. The main responsibility of Walmart managers and employees is to make decisions. Decisions making involves deciding what is right or wrong for the organization. Stakeholders decide on ways through which organizations' performance can be improved. It is important to ensure that the right decision is always made.
When referring to the function of leading, it is the act of stimulation. A good leader has to have the ability to motivate and communicate with employees. This ability can be seen within Wal-Mart human resources associates, who are also classified as leaders in the organization. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) forbids age discrimination again people who are age 40 or older. The law prohibits discrimination in any aspect of employment, including hiring, firing, pay, job assignments, promotions, layoff, training, benefits, and any other term or condition of employment. It is unlawful to harass a person because of his or her age.
The last function of management is controlling. The purpose of controlling is to monitor the performance and make changes necessary for organizational success. Management of Wal-Mart can be thought of as the controlling function because its job is to plan, organize, lead, and control the activities of the organization so that goals can be achieved (Lewis, Goodman, & Fandt, 1998). There are four fundamentals steps to follow:
- Establishing standardsset for manufacturing lead time, turnover rate, Maintenance and repair turnaround times, inventory levels, and quality.
- Measuring performanceneeds to be monitored continuously and feedback for the process must be immediately provided. Production volume, production capacity, number of rejects per hour, quality of products, cost per unit, etc.
- Compare the measured performance against standardsthis performance does not have to be exactly equal to the standard.
- Evaluate performance and actwhen the performance of the process falls within the acceptable tolerance limits. The management must take an action to correct the deviation depending on the error in the process.
The company has identified improving opportunities to strengthen its shop-keeping skills and ensure stores are clean, well-merchandised, and operated by engaged managers and associates. Walmart has too much inventory in the back rooms, and our processes are where we want them to be. This is caused by some undue shrinkage and some out of stocks. We have too many displays, not allowing associates to merchandise their store the way they need for their customers.
Walmart should be evaluating the store layout and design in both Supercenter and Neighborhood Market formats, from the ease of navigation, all the way down to the lighting and temperature of a store. One change I feel is making an addition of a bakery and deli.
Walmart is leveraging adjacencies such as gas, care clinics, and financial services, to drive more additional traffic to our stores.
