This is the first Ethics & Compliance Specialist Capstone Project installment as outlined in Module 0 located in the Learning Modules section.

The basis for your work will be the knowledge gained in this module related to the types of stakeholders which interact with a company, normative ethical theories used in making an ethical decision, and the benefits to an organization of ethical business behavior.

In order to assist your Capstone employer with their focus on individual ethical standards, you will review information about an investment trader by the name of Kweku Adoboli who engaged in fraudulent behavior and cost his employer, UBS (bank), almost $2 billion. To gain insight into UBS, view the UBS Investment Bank section of their website. Next, view this news story which ran at the time of Mr. Adoboli's sentencing posted by the Financial Times: UBS trader jailed over 1.4 billion fraud (approximately $1.8 billion) (Time: 6:11, closed captions available from Amara), and respond to the following questions:

1. Summarize the facts of this case including the type of position that Kweku Adoboli held at UBS, his level of success and his level of integrity. Do you believe that Kweku subscribed to the concept of ethical relativism? Support your answer.

2. Describe at least four types of UBS stakeholders who were impacted by Kweku's actions.

3. Explain how the corporate culture at UBS as described in Kweku's defense may have influenced his business ethics. In your opinion, did Kweku have a short-term or long-term perspective as it relates to his fraudulent behavior? Also, do you agree with the comments regarding Kweku's greed stated in the video? Support your response.

4. For this requirement, view the interview conducted with Kweku after his release from jail by the Financial Times: Lessons From a 'Rogue' Trader (Time: 4:03, closed captions available from Amara). Based on the potential for a similar occurrence and Kweku's comments regarding people's behavior as it relates to employer demands, discuss how an employee in a similar situation could use each of the three normative ethical theories in approaching ethical behavior and decision-making to avoid the same type of outcome that UBS experienced. Make sure to provide an example for each:

    1. Utilitarianism
    2. Deontology
    3. Virtue Theory
