Topic 1: The Communication Process

In the communication process, four major styles have been identified: passive, aggressive, assertive, and passive, aggressive. Which one of these styles best represent the behavior you would practice in your organization? Explain your answer.

As a law enforcement organization supervisor, I would seek to practice the assertive communication style. Law enforcement agencies are tasked with upholding the rule of law while catering to the needs of society. Assertive communication is most important for criminal justice practitioners because assertive communication establishes equal control and responsibility on behalf of all parties involved in the communication process. Assertive communicators cater both to their own needs, desires, ideas, and feelings as they cater to those of others (Alvernia University, 2018). Consequently, they are capable of connecting with others, controlling situations, taking ownership, and gaining respect. Assertive communicators frequently use "I" and "We" statements because these statements emphasize equity in communication. In a goal-oriented field like policing, feedback and listening are two essential communication steps. Effective, assertive supervisors actively listen and are always clear and concise in their messages to peers, subordinates, and the public (UK Violence Intervention and Prevention Center, n.d.).

2. Ila Christiansen

Assertive, because you want your subordinates to recognize you as the supervisor, but not fear or try to dominate you. Being assertive means people will not only listen but resect you. You can't be a passive leader or people will not listen; they will do what they want with no fear of punishment. On the other hand, being to aggressive means that people will fear you, and will not tell you what they think or how they feel about any situation, you'll also lose any respect they may have had towards you.
