This is Units 2

As a manager at a hotel that has been working over 10 years, I can say that decision making and problem solving are critical when it comes to making decisions that is going to help us, but also helping the customer to have a safe stay at the hotel. Daily, I juggle schedules, resources, risks, quality and many other factors. The Problem-Solving Process is used often given all the issues that arise especially when there is an issue between the employee vs. customer, employee vs. employees, or even customer vs the customer, or maybe the issue is in the room. There is so many issues that can happened but we try our best to make sure that the customer is happy, so as the manager I will try to see what the problem is, and to scope out what I can do, to resolve the problem, and there is times where I can resolve the issue or sometime you just cant.

Based on the learning activity, we learn that there are Six Stage Problem Solving techniques that can be applied to problem solving and decision making.

Define the problem (what is the root cause?): Our current problem is how many rooms are we able to sell, or what is happening between employees, or between the customers, or is there something wrong with the rooms, ex: if the bed is broken, if the fridge is not working, There are the questions that we try to ask, to figure out what is the main issue, and the main problem. The example that I will explain, is that the bed is broken, as well as the fridge.

The next step is to Analyze the problem (what it the current state?) We have a customer that is not happy about his/her room because the bed is broken, as well the fridge. My initial thought or some of the questions that I would have to think about is as an employee is that, were the room items already broken, or was someone else in the room before this customer, and the other thing we have to look at is how badly is the damage. But its also really important for the person that is going to stay in the room to examine the room as well, to make sure that there is something that is not broken or missing. So it is important for the customer to check if there is room is in good condition, but as the employee we also need to make sure that the room quality is on point.

The next step is to Develop Solutions (brainstorm ideas): We try to brain-storm as much as we can, through all the employees to make sure that our customers are going to get the best stay as possible. We try to figure out what is the main issue that all the customers go through when they stay at the hotel. Ways that we can make there stay in more of a positive way. If the main issue is for example the bed being broken, or the fridge being broken, as a business it is our responsibility to update these items. But updating these items can be financially expensive. As a business we have to brainstorm different alternatives ways to benefit the business but also giving the customer the service that they need.

The next step is Evaluate Solutions: Not upgrading the items in the hotel can impact the revenue and the profit that you are trying to reach. If as a business we are not providing the best outcomes for the customers, it will be really hard to achieve our goal. It is better to evaluate what the next steps with the team first, and than we can implement.

The next step is Choosin and Implement the Best Solution: As a business we try to implement the best solution, as a team we try to work on how to make this business better, and how to improve. We have to fix the issues that are happening in a tasteful manner. It is important that we implement the best solutions to help us expand our business but also reducing the risk that can come with it.

Lastly is Following up and Evaluate Progress: Generally, it is really important to follow up everything you have done, including maybe with the customers that have stayed previously and asking them what they liked about staying at the hotel. I thankfully have meet so many people throughout my 10 years of working at this hotel, and asking them what their experiences have been like, and throughout the years the same people, the same faces still come to this day, and have told us that whenever they come in town, they will stop at our place. For a business that makes us happy to see the changes that we have made, to not only improve the rooms, but also the quality of the business. This makes us really happy to see.

Within my team we use our integrative thinking skills to make choices and join our ideas to better our business through communication, compromise and being considerate of each other's ideas. As we we build stronger relationships and improve for future endeavors.
