This lab will be interactive using the following site: oPhysics Ex. The goal here is to play for the three different polarizers and run the simulation with changing the angles. There are four polarizers the first one first the left is a vertical polarizer that you can not control. The system starts with unpolarized light going through the vertical polarizer (so this would use to determine /1). Assume the initial intensity is: I, = 100- 1.) First you will have one polarizer and you will pick an angle between 0 and 90 degrees (not 0 or 90 degrees). You will use Malus Law to calculate the intensity (12) out put intensity. You will record the angle you used. You will also describe the wave that passes the polarizer. 2.) Using one polarizer, set that polarizer to 90 degrees. Describe what you see happened (use math to explain as well). 3.) Using two polarizers, set the first polarizers to 32 degrees and the second two 76 degrees. Calculate the output intensity (13). Write what you see happen to the wave. 4.) Now using three polarizers, set the first polarizers to 32 degrees and the second two 76 degrees (you will need to move the angles forward to keep the systems to same when you switch three polarizers), then calculate what the angle of the third added polarizer has to be so that cancel the wave (14 = 0-). mi ). You will not be able to check your work as this interactive only goes between zero and 90 degrees. 5.) Using three polarizers set the first polarizer to 90 deg and second one to 25 deg and third one to 50 deg and describe what you noticed through each polarizer. For this write you will have an introduction to the lab and then results where you describe what you observed for each step above
