This paper describes algebraic techniques for solving problems in physics when the quantities are given by letters (parameters). The suggested techniques do not exhaust all techniques; they are to provide you with foundations for further explorations. Surprisingly, the physics understanding to solve such problems is not deep, and the shift is toward algebraic manipulations. In general, there are two general categories of problems. When one object is involved (called here Type 1 problem). When more than one objects are involved (Type 2) Physics problems can also be classified based on where the variable is placed within the formula. If the variable is the symbol of the quantity on the formula left side: The explicit type If the variable is embedded in the algebraic expression of the formula on its right side: The implicit type Sometimes, two parameters change simultaneously, creating yet another algebraic combination. While formally classifying the problems is optional, realizing their algebraic structure helps to solve them We will first demystify Type 1 problems. After that, the techniques for Type 2 are very similar and will follow. To solve any of these problems, you must first select a correct formula to model the given scenario. These formulas are typically not given within the problem. All combinations of problems require formulating and solving a system of equations
