This Seat is Taken As one of the country's flagship airlines, Philippine Air Pacific has been on the profit recovery path after an almost two-year debacle that was the Covid-19 pandemic. With ease travel restrictions, businessmen and tourists, both local and foreign, are now back on the planes again. Because the company has earned enough profit before the pandemic struck, it was able to procure in January 2020 a couple of Airbus A380-800 units. Each plane has a capacity for 520 passengers. The company was not able to deploy the planes for use as the lockdown caused by the pandemic struck in March 2020 and air travel has never been the same again. With the directive of the new administration of the Philippine government to ease the flow of business and travel starting in July 2022, Philippine Air Pacific was able to finally deploy its two brand new plane units a month later. Sylvia Arevalo heads the sales and marketing department of Philippine Air Pacific as Chief Marketing Officer. She is one of the eight C-level executives of the airline who report directly to the CEO. The maiden flights of both the Airbus A380-800 units are Manila-USA; one is east coast bound and the other destined for the west coast. Both planes are meant to supplement four other smaller planes, Airbus A350, of the company flying the same route, two each per route. Airbus A350 planes have flight schedules in both routes one day after the flight of each Airbus A380-800 plane in their respective route. A350s are fairly good and decent planes but passengers prefer the two-level cabin of Airbus A380-800 leaving the former with 30% excess capacity. The Manila-New York plane was fully booked during its maiden flight. Ms. Arevalo expected the same for the Manila-California flight of the other Airbus plane but the maiden flight appears to have hit some form of turbulence even before it takes flight. Apparently, the 10 reservation agents that include the two working online, miscalculated the capacity of the Airbus A380-800 for its maiden Manila-California flight and were able to book a combined 620 passengers, 100 more than the plane's capacity. These 10 reservation agents are supervised by Alma Cayanan who immediately reported the problem to the Chief Marketing Officer. Question: 1. Time context 2. Viewpoint 3. Central problem 4.
