This section covers Ch. 6 of Talking to My Daughter about the Economy, "Haunted Machines," that is, pgs. 109-133. Each student is expected to respond to all parts of the following question and to respond to the answers of other students at least once, preferably two to three times. These responses can be in the form of debatable points, agreements, expanded views, etc. Have a natural conversation. There are 8 discussion boards for TMD. In total, they are worth a total of 20 pts, so each individual discussion board is worth 2.5 pts. This is the sixth.

This chapter centers on one of the crucial elements of market society: the push for continuous technological development. Why is technological development so important for a competitive economy? Why is it also so frightening and problematic? Varoufakis sees two dangers: one of full automation, the other a rejection of technological development. How do we avoid these? Note his frequent use of science fiction in this chapter, be it Frankenstein, Star Trek, or The Matrix. Explain how he uses at least one of these to help make his point. Evaluate his position.
