This unit covered quite a few of the insanity defenses. What is missing in dealing with offenders and victims is the need to address mental health issues. Some mental health issues are imposed by actual diseases or other inherent mental health issues arising from the genetics from birth. Other mental health issues arise from mental disorders, which serve to hinder a person's typical control of reactions to a given situation. Some of these mental disorders are Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Epilepsy, Alzheimer's, Autism, Asbergers, and other related disorders. Why is it important for law enforcement officers to receive training and possess a strong working knowledge of mental health issues and disorders?
