This week we're discussing visual attention (whether exogenous or endogenous, overt or covert), and how, in actuality, we only attend (and therefore only fully "see") a small fraction of objects & events: a typical individual misses almost everything. Day to day, because of practice in well-engineered (ergonomics; human factors) environments, negative consequences of this are minimized. But, a person can be forced to notice this limitation in fun ways, through magic. For this exercise, I would like you to find a compelling example of attention manipulation in magic. So, we are looking for more than a cool trick/illusion here, we want a good effect that works because it manipulates attention. In magic, the exploitation of an observer's attention goes by different technical terms. It is most closely related to the idea of "misdirection", and plays an especially large role in "sleight of hand" and "close-up magic" effects. To get you started, you can check out the work of Anna Deguzman, Mario Lopez, Ran'D Shine, and Apollo Robbins. Then just share a little description for me of who/what you found, and a link to the trick!
